I’m not sure about you but I’m getting a little bit old. Maybe not in a chronological sense (I assure you that I’m under 50, for whatever that matters), but I certainly feel as though I’m getting older as I see all of the new gizmos and gadgets on today’s market. Surprisingly to me, however, shower speakers aren’t all that new.
I remember first hearing about them about five years ago when I was staging a house we’d recently renovated. “Put a speaker in the shower and turn on some music,” a friend suggested as I struggled to find a way to set a relaxed ambiance in the house.
“Put a speaker where?”
Yes, shower speakers are real things. Whether you are interested in blasting your favorite rock song in the shower, you’d like to be able to listen in on conference calls, or you need to catch up with your mother in the very little spare time you can find – we have at least one shower speaker on this list of top contenders which is bound to suit your needs.
There are many things to consider when purchasing a shower speaker. Let’s take some time to go over a few of the basics here.
Waterproof – The first thing you should consider is whether or not your speaker absolutely needs to be waterproof. Completely and thoroughly waterproof speakers are difficult to come by, but can be found. They are extremely necessary if you plan to fully submerge your speaker in water or if there is a possibility it may accidentally occur. Personally, I save this extreme type portable speaker for my boating trips and for use in my pool, but do not use one in my shower.
Water Resistant – You can also choose to purchase a water-resistant speaker. This type of speaker will not survive a full submersion in water, but will escape unharmed from a splash of water here and there. These are the best in-shower options if you plan to place them in splash zones such as over-the-shower-head shower caddies.
Some people choose portable speakers which aren’t really waterproof or water resistant at all. We have included some of those speakers on this list for just that reason. Since there are so few waterproof and water resistant speakers on the market, in general, it is understandable that some of the features people are hoping for from their speakers may not be included in that limited number of models. If you do purchase this type of speaker, though, be careful not to set it in the direct path of any water or possible splashes.
Shape and Size – The shape and size of your prospective speaker is also important to consider, because you want to be sure that it will fit into the limited space available inside your shower. Consider the shape and size of your tub ledges and shower caddy shelves when making this decision.
Function – The actual functions and features of the speaker should be another consideration you make as you compare possible choices. Some require you to dock an I-Phone, I-Pod, or similar device directly onto it or through a cable. These will not be the best option for in-the-shower speakers, because you aren’t likely going to want to bring your phone or mp3 player into the shower with you. Try finding one that at least has Bluetooth capability.
Some speakers also have WiFi so that you can surf the web while you’re in the shower. Also, some have built-in microphones which allow you to use voice commands and even make phone calls.
